Every year, as summer comes to an end, we look forward to the transition to cozy season. These seasonal transitions come in many forms, like switching from iced coffee to hot, trading our breezy wardrobe for knits and functional layers, and of course, preparing to spend more time indoors. With shorter days and cooler temperatures upon us, now is the time to make our home interiors more inviting and comfortable. For a bit of inspiration, we’re rounding up some favorite cozy decorating trends for fall.
We can’t talk about cozy home decor without talking about the textiles. Plush throws and knit blankets are always in for fall, but this year we’re seeing designers going even more extravagant with their materials. Case in point? The rich brown velvet bedding featured in one of the bedrooms of the 2024 REAL SIMPLE Home. We’re ready to dive in and hibernate.
Monochromatic color palettes are also in favor right now, and they happen to be the perfect move for fall. Using the same tones throughout the room can create a cozy, enveloping feeling—especially when done with earthy tones, like the deep brown shades featured in the bedroom above. While you may not want to paint your walls for the season, consider matching your bedding to your curtain color or your curtains with the color of your rug. Not only can this give the room a more cohesive look overall, but it can also create a den-like feeling that is perfect for cozy fall nights.
Lighting plays a major role in creating a cozy ambiance in your home. We’re currently loving the use of sconces—like this one from Rejuvenation featured in the 2024 REAL SIMPLE Home speakeasy (aka the cellar)—for creating more layered lighting options. Combining sconces with table lamps and other forms of lighting at different levels helps create soft focal points of light throughout the room—which is a welcome alternative to harsh overhead lighting.
Red has been dominating our wardrobes and our home interiors this year—and it’s already forecasted for 2025. The color is scattered all throughout our 2024 REAL SIMPLE Home, in the cozy club chairs in the living room, on a bathroom curtain, and on the pantry walls. But instead of the bright, cherry red shades that were recently trending, designers opted for rich, wine-toned shades that just happen to be perfect for the fall season.
