A family-friendly showcase of experiments and gadgetry is coming to Alexandria City High School this weekend.

The 7th Annual MakerFaire NoVa is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Alexandria City High School (3330 King Street).

“At its core, MakerFaire is about more than just showcasing gadgets and prototypes,” the fair organizers said in a release. “It’s a movement that encourages people from all walks of life to step beyond the boundaries of their daily lives and engage in the act of making. Whether you are a seasoned engineer, an aspiring inventor, or a curious hobbyist, MakerFaire NoVa creates an environment where exploration and play collide. It is in these spaces that some of the most groundbreaking ideas are born.”

The website said that MakerFaire is filled with booths focused on hands-on activities, from building robots to spinning yarn from wool.

The marquee item this year is the Starphone, described as “a reimagined public telephone booth designed to bring back the essence of human connection in the digital age.”

The release said the event is open to all ages, with parents encouraged to bring kids and teens and possibly spark an interest in STEM fields. Advance tickets are $13 for adults, $4 for children, $10 for seniors/military and $30 for families. Tickets are slightly more expensive if purchased at the door.

“In a world where technological advances often feel disconnected from the average person, MakerFaire NoVa 2024 is a reminder that innovation is for everyone,” the release said. “It’s a call to action for creators to continue experimenting, collaborating, and, most importantly, sharing their work with the world. MakerFaire NoVa doesn’t just celebrate technology; it celebrates the human spirit of ingenuity.”
