If their online search habits are any indication, Americans clearly have a couple of stand-out favorites in the automotive world. Let’s begin with a look at the most searched car brands across the country.
Toyota took the crown as the most-searched car brand over the last 12 months, a testament to its widespread popularity and trusted brand image. Following closely behind was Tesla, a brand that has revolutionized the automotive industry with its cutting-edge electric vehicles and innovative technology. Both brands have also won Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards this year.
Now that we’ve established a nationwide view, let’s break it down further. To determine which brands were most associated with each state, we compared state data to national averages. The following map shows above-average searches for car brands in each state.
Although Toyota had the highest number of searches overall, the brand didn’t have more searches in any one state than the rest compared to the national average. Tesla only did so in one state: Nevada. This finding suggests consumers might be more interested in purchasing a Tesla in that area. Notably, searches for Subaru swelled in several Western and Northern states, while Lincoln and Acura mostly took the Northeast.
Next up is a look at the least associated car brands in each state, the ones with search volumes lower than the national average.
Based on our criteria, Tesla was the least-associated brand in a number of states, including:
These findings suggest that there may be room for Tesla to expand their marketing and operations in these states. We also gathered data about Americans searching for various car types, from trucks to minivans.
SUVs were the most-searched type of vehicle in the U.S., with over 3 million searches per capita in the past year, reflecting the nation’s love for these versatile and spacious vehicles. They’ve evidently won the debate over SUVs vs. minivans, with almost five times the number of U.S. searches. As more consumers consider switching to cleaner, more sustainable driving options, “electric car” took the second spot, with 2,357,150 searches. Meanwhile, “sports car” came in third place with 1,632,320 searches.
