There’s much to take inspiration from here, from Gucci’s show-stopping over-the-knee boots to Bottega Veneta’s minimal-yet-oversized wide-leg trousers. Whether you lean towards statement accessories or paired-back classics, there is something for everyone.
Just because the weather is gloomy doesn’t mean your knitwear has to be. Sprinkle some joy into your layering this season with brightly colored separates, or make a mix-matched statement by color-blocking a crew-neck and a cardigan under a wool coat. Just add your favorite jeans and ballet flats for the perfect pop of prep.

As my colleague Brooke Bobb wondered in an essay recently, can a pants person fall in love with skirts? This season, the answer is yes. Circle skirts in midi lengths were all over the runways in rich fall fabrics from suede to poplin to wool. In addition to their charm, they’re surprisingly easy to wear—and comfortable. Take a cue from Miu Miu and try yours with a blue button-down shirt and high boots for the new cool-girl uniform.

All of a sudden, leopard patterns are being spotted (see what I did there?) on coats, skirts, tops, and accessories, offering a graphic break to neutrals. It may even be safe to say that leopard is the new neutral. From a skirt with a cool leather jacket to a coat with tan or black trousers, leopard separates add just the right amount of statement to any look.

The in-between jacket is always the toughest nut to crack, but we found the secret this season: It’s all in the fit. From barn jackets to leather and fringe options, it’s all about finding a shape that’s short-hemmed and boxy, yet oversized. Pair your favorite utility barn jacket with vintage jeans and satin blouse, wear a leather jacket with a pencil skirt to add a touch of cool to an otherwise stuffy look, or go all Americana with your favorite fringe. The choices are endless!

Ruffled maxi dresses were moving and shaking down the runways, and we couldn’t get enough. This season they’ve been styled to feel less precious, which not only makes them feel cooler but also offers a perfect blueprint for when you need one outfit to take you from day to night. Go with a high boot to lean in to the ’70s vibes, and add your favorite gold jewelry and chain shoulder bag for the full effect.

More is more with this season’s biggest boot trend. The over-the-knee style is not only an effortlessly chic statement, but can also add some extra warmth if you’re wearing a mini dress. These look equally cool scrunched down, with straight-leg trousers and cropped denim rolled up to meet halfway.

The new suit might just be a skirt suit. And although full circle shapes are big for skirts when it comes to separates, here you’re going to want a tighter pencil-skirt style to play off the key blazer of the season: an oversized, single-button-placket jacket. The best part about this look is its versatility, which all comes down to the details. Try a tonal scarf or colorful shirt and Mary Janes for a more playful effect, or pumps for more polish.

Chloé truly changed the conversation with this one. It’s fair to say most fashion people know exactly where they were when Chemena Kamali dropped her first collection last February. All the boho pieces were there, from dreamy bucolic lace blouses to the perfect patchwork jean, not to mention accessories like gold chain belts and towering wedges. Now that it’s fall, the market has taken the hint, offering us plenty of ways to tap into the look.

Miu Miu and Chanel
Lately, designers have embraced the mess of hectic everyday life, showing overstuffed bags and purses dangling with charms. This season, the maximalist bag moment has evolved a bit, and now it’s all about attaching a pouch or wristlet to the outside of your shoulder bag. Try adding a rich cognac clutch to a snake-print shoulder bag, or embrace bright colors by pairing a yellow pouch with a grass green purse.

The all-in-one winner for warmer outerwear this season is a coat with a built-in scarf. Toteme’s scarf coat was really the viral starting point for this, and this season they’re offering a longer version. Other designers have also taken a stab at the trend in rich, fall-appropriate latte colors that look effortlessly chic with just about anything, from a dress to jeans to leather pants.

Oversized trousers have been going strong for several seasons now, but this fall, lighter hues and an early jump on winter whites took center stage. Let Bottega Veneta be the blueprint for how to style them and wear yours with a sculptural top and classic heeled boots, creating a look that leans towards minimalism but still offers high drama.

A sleeveless sheath dress is always a good choice, and this season, beautiful floral appliques and fabrics with just the right amount of shine and texture add interest to this classic shape. Balance these with a heavier monk-strap shoe or chunky high boot, and throw on an oversized blazer for the perfect office-to-cocktail-party look.
